Itinerary: Southern Caribbean

We traveled to experience the Islands, not celebrate Puerto Rican heritage! (Let us start by stating we are not prejudice and do treat others equal.) The ship leaves San Juan and is over-loaded with Puerto Ricans. I discovered local Puerto Ricans get lower prices for the same trip which creates a certain patron ambiance problem for those of us who are not Puerto Rican. It was evident Carnival promotes weddings and festivities to attract locals which creates an environment of celebration of Puerto Rican heritage. Because the majority is Puerto Rican, the music selection of karaoke and entertainment room ambiance was that of Puerto Rican clubs, including the crowds cheering when groups disclosed they were Puerto Rican. This majority influenced entire ship. Several of us felt out-of-place and uncomfortable. We talked a newly wed Italian couple into completing the cruise, as they were leaving mid-cruise in Barbados. This local promotion was not disclosed to us on purchase. Carnival also heavily promotes purchasing on-shore jewelry, art, activities. Like being on the Home Shopping TV Network for seven days. I think Carnival owns Diamonds International who they promote 24-7 and has several stores on each island. They push everything but a timeshare and none of these products are produced from the islands. It is easy to miss the experience of the native people, their lifestyle and food. Do your own on shore excursions. PROS: We loved the ship, clean with great service. Food is above average and plentiful. They also are very organized and safe ship to be on. Smooth ship on ruff seas. Awesome gym and equipment. Nice balcony rooms which are cleaned three times a day.
