Just returned this morning from a week on
the Victory. I am not a cruise person, and was expecting the worst week of my
life. It wasn't that bad, but it wasn't the best time I've had either.
We arrived at the gate in NY around 1pm, got on without any hassle at all. Went
right to the lunch buffet, ate a pretty decent meal. Our cabin was on the 6th
UPPER deck, no window, it was small, but for a boat it was decent size. No
complaints.
Breakfast buffet: worst food I have ever tasted in my life. I took what I
thought were eggs, but it was bright yellow grits. Awful food for breakfast.
The food in the Atlantic Dining Room seemed like the chef was trying to be too
fancy, and ended up being weird. The lunches in the Atlantic and Pacific rooms
were even more bizarre. I ordered what they called an "Italian antipasto", and
was served 3 octopus strings and an artichoke. I sent it back. the lunch menu
was always unappealing, so we hit the buffet everyday after.
In the Atlantic dining room, Petya and Dadan were wonderful servers. The menu
was a bit strange, but we always found something to order and enjoy. I mostly
ordered beef, and the only major complaint is the size of the sides dishes. Once
I literally got served a SHOT GLASS of mashed potatoes??? The night they had
lobster (rock lobster though), Dadan gave my father in law an extra one, so I
got two. Nice guy!
The pizza was decent, the burgers too, juices were way over sweet, coffee bar
was extra but well worth it.
The shows were pretty lame, the comedy show was funny but predictable jokes,
even when drunk. Sign and sail cards just don't seem like money, but it adds up.
There just wasn't enough to do each day and night, except the casino, where I
won $200 on the blackjack tables.
We got off in St. Johns, which looked like slums when we got off, and found a
quick bite to eat and got back on the ship bored to death. Excursions are WAY
overpriced and sell out on the ship in minutes.
It rained for 2 days and we didn't get off in Halifax because of the rain. It
was pretty miserable weather wise.
All in all it was a decent time. Be prepared to spend a lot of money, deal with
kids EVERYWHERE, even at 2 am, and spend a lot of time in the casino. That's all
there is to do really. My next cruise may not be for a very long time. But like
I said, cruises are not my thing.
