Ship: Carnival Celebration
Sailing Date: June 12th, 2003
Itinerary: Galveston to Cozumel
I was very apprehensive at first about taking this cruise. I had read every cruise review I could find on the Celebration. I'm glad I did not base my decision on some of the reviews I had read. We would have missed a GREAT time! We got to Galveston early and unloaded our luggage. Within 30-45 minutes, we were on-board - enjoying a buffet lunch on the lido deck. Our dining room was the "Vista" and we had early seating. Our waiter was "Ariel", but we called him "Mermaid". He was wonderful. He catered to our every request. The captain's dinner meal was delicious (lobster and prime rib!). Actually, all meals were excellent. There was one meal that I didn't really care for, so "Mermaid" brought me something else. There was pizza and ice cream 24 hours a day. The buffets had wonderful fresh fruit every day. The one negative thing I can say is that the drink "specials" were usually watered down due to them being made in big containers and poured as needed. The "bucket of beer" was the best value (4 cans in a bucket of ice). The frozen drinks were very good.
Although there were 1600+ passengers on board, never did we feel crowded or have trouble doing what we wanted to do. The ocean was very calm and beautiful. The cabins down our hallway were having plumbing problems when we first got on, so our toilets were not functioning on several occasions. This was fixed very quickly and we had no problems the remainder of the cruise. Our cabin steward disappointed me, seeing how I had to call for towels on several occasions and service was not very prompt. I complained to the purser's office. The next day we were sent an apology letter and a complimentary bottle of champagne. Needless to say - service did improve after that. We learned that staff work for Carnival on a 8 or 10 month contract (I can't remember which) and their contract renewal every year is dependent upon passenger's comments. The crew was very international...we met very neat people from all over the world.
Shore excursions??? Do the catamaran/snorkel tour! It's a BLAST!!!! Definitely worth $55.00 per person! We did the 9:00 am tour and then went shopping in the afternoon. You have to do lunch and have a drink at Carlos & Charlie's! It's a very fun time!
Back on board, the Country X-treme show received a standing ovation...it was GREAT!
There were people of every age on this ship. We met a young man - probably in his mid 20's who was cruising with his 86 year old grandmother and they were having a blast. If you want 4 days of fun with down to earth people, I highly recommend the Celebration. If you want a snobby, "high class" environment - you probably need to find another cruise.
