Thursday, we arrived around 12:30 pm and were checked in within 30 minutes. We first started out at the Lido deck for lunch which was just ok. The buffet was nothing spectacular. Ate a hamburger and salad. We then went to checkout our stateroom and was pleasantly surprised with the size of the ocean view room on the Empress deck. These rooms are much bigger than the standard on Royal's, Majesty of the Seas. Dinner was great, a little early at 6:15 but the waiters were excellent. We asked for a late seating changed and were accommodated for the rest of the cruise.
Friday: Woke up early, the port call was from 7:30-2pm and we wanted to get the most out of Key West. The time at this port needs to be longer there is a lot to see and no time to enjoy the beach. When you arrive at Key West a bus picks you up and takes you to town. I recommend taking the trolley tour, Ms. L is great.
Dinner was formal night back on the ship. Be prepared to be bombarded with photographers every where you turn. The dinner was excellent, lobster and prime rib. At dinner time do not hesitate to ask for more or multiples, they will gladly accommodate.
Saturday: Port of Calica, getting off at this port was the only frustration we experienced, the boat was late and it took about an hour and half to get off. Then to top it off there were photographers waiting to take your picture when you are hot and mad. My suggestion for an inexpensive alternative to an excursion here is to take a taxi ($10) each way to Playa del Carmen. There are many little 'beach clubs' on the beach where you can rent a chair for $6 and have bar/food service the whole time you're laying out and relaxing. Also don't miss out on the fresh fruit vendors, awesome pineapple and coconuts. And if adventurous try some Ceviche, really good from the beach club we camped out at. Playa del Carmen is beautiful and very laid back, not the craziness of Cancun. Needless to say that 6 hours is not enough in that paradise.
Saturday dinner was great too. Had a great seafood platter.
Sunday: all day at sea. There was plenty
to do all day, sleep in, play bingo, enjoy the entertainment on the Lido deck,
work out. Pack up and get ready to leave the ship. The dinner was also great,
lots of choices.
Overall I was very pleased with this cruise. I have been on a previous Carnival cruise (Eastern 7nights) and can say that Carnival is really good. I prefer them over Royal Caribbean. The food is better, the entertainment and the atmosphere. I think this cruise can be enjoyed by singles, couples, families etc. I would go on the ship again and try the itinerary that goes to Grand Cayman and Jamaica.
