My family and I just took our second Carnival cruise and it was absolutely fantastic. I have read poor reviews of Carnival and really have no idea where they come from. On both of our Carnival cruises, this is what we found:

Service:
The service is always excellent. Cabin stewards, wait staff, bartenders, ships officers, etc. are all quite courteous and helpful. Now given the international nature of the crew, some have better English than others.  And sometimes cultural differences can be interpreted by some as rudeness. For example, on this last cruise, one of our waiters referred to our 11 year old son as 'the boy'.  However, it was not at all meant to be rude. He was a wonderful waiter, and in fact made sure my son got things like an extra desert.

Food:
The main formal dining is a pretty good place. Now I live in Dallas and have eaten at Truluck's, Kirby's Steak House, Chamberlains Fish Market, etc.  The food on the ship is about one step below that, but certainly far above a steak and ale or Red Lobster.

Now the buffet food offered is probably on par with an steak and ale or Red Lobster...good but nothing to brag about.

Entertainment: What do you want to do? Golf clinics? Dancing? Shore Excursions? Kids Activities? Art Auction? Casino?  There was so much to do I never got around to doing all I had planned.  I had a wonderful time.

Drinks: Yes drinks cost money...guess what folks go to any nightclub, restaurant, anywhere and they cost about the same as they do on a ship.

In short, my wife and I had an excellent time (again) and plan to sail with Carnival cruises again.
