One of the youngest of the big cruise lines, Celebrity Cruises was established in
1989 by the Chandris Group, a Greek company that has been in the passenger shipping business since
the 1920s. Celebrity's first ship was the former liner Meridian, followed by the company's first
newbuild, Horizon. One of Celebrity's hallmarks is its award-winning cuisine, created and supervised
by three-star Michelin master chef Michel Roux.
All five new Celebrity ships that entered service between 1990 and 1997 were
constructed at the renowned German Jos. L. Meyer shipyard (commonly known as the Meyer Werft). In
1997 Royal Caribbean Cruises acquired Celebrity Cruises. As part of an aggressive newbuilding
program, Celebrity cruises has launched four brand-new 91,000 gt Millennium-class superliners since
mid-2000. To see the different classes of ships, click here.
