Number of Cruises: 6.1
Cruise Line: Celebrity
Sailing Date: June 2nd, 2001
Itinerary: Amsterdam, Oslo, Stockholm, Tallin, St. Petersburg,
6/1 Friday - Arrive AMS after an 8.5 hour flight from MIA. shuttle bus to hotel, drop luggage and go see the town. Early to bed!
6/2 Saturday - 1120 taxi to Cruise Terminal. Boarding time published as 1400, boarded at 1200 with no lines. 1230 told to go to the theater where we will be escorted to our cabins. Declined the escort and just went to our cabin. Key/Charge cards were waiting for us. Dropped our carry-ons and started to tour the ship, grab a bite on the Oasis deck and sip a contemporary adult beverage. The food presented at the buffet was plentiful, attractive and very tasty. 1700 on deck for "Sail Away" and a new adventure. Several slow miles from the city to the North Sea so it was time for us to go to Second Seating as we completed our transit through the sea lock.
While at dinner we heard the news - ship's port propeller had hit something! We turned around. Later we were told that everyone had a $100 credit on their ship's charge account.
6/3 Sunday - Divers had done their inspection of the port prop, the cruise was over. The ship, with the aid of tugs, returned to Amsterdam. One would expect the 1,800+ campers to be up in arms. Didn't happen. Celebrity toed the mark: Full refund of cruise cost, full refund of air travel for those who purchased their own air travel, voucher for any cruise (up to 14 days) valid until November 1, 2002. Celebrity personnel were brought into Amsterdam to assist in making air arrangements for return home flights. In addition, Celebrity became our downtown hotel with all meals and services just as if we were at sea (Ship's Stores and Casino were closed)for Sunday through noon on Wednesday. Shuttle busses were provided from 0830 to 2330 daily at 15 minute intervals to take passengers to the city center.
The quality of the food on Galaxy, as well as those who served it, was OUTSTANDING! Galaxy is a very clean, comfortable and easy to navigate ship.
I commend Celebrity for the manner in which they treated their passengers after this most unfortunate incident.
I truly look forward to sailing on a Celebrity ship on our next cruise.
