We sailed on Celebrity -Galaxy on Jan. 15,2000 to the southern caribbean. This was our 3rd different cruise line, the others being R.C.L. and Carnival. We went with friends who cruise a lot and feel it's the best.
Our expectations were perhaps too high since we found Celebrity no better or worse than the others. The ship (Galaxy) was well appointed but certainly not classy, just simple.
The staterooms are very nice and roomy. Lots of closet space and good sized washroom. Our cabin steward could usually be found but we had to continually ask for a 3rd towel. Two won't cut it as long as the wife is washing her hair. The pillows were awful. Bring your own! In-room safe was a great idea.
The dining room was nice but noisy. Food was good, no better or worse than others. Unfortuately our waiter and busboy mumbled so much we could barely understand them. Our section (4 tables) was almost always 2 courses behind everyone else. I'm sure waiters have priority in the galley and ours was dead last. Watch for that. Our Maitre'd was the absolute worst. On the 2nd night he asked us how everything was and we told him it was excellent except that the coffee was extremely weak. It was obvious that he didn't care for our constructive criticism and literally ignored and avoided us the remainder of the week. It was very unsettling to have him work every table around us but ours. He finally schmoozed on tip night, how insulting. Our wine steward and bar server got his tip.
Our friends almost got killed on a jeep excursion when the driver left the jeep without hitting the emergency brake. There were about 12 people in this big jeep. After cpmplaining, they did get a refund 3 days later. I don't think they should've had to ask.
The spa facilities were excellent. The casino was quite dark but the dealers were really good. However the closing time was inconsistent.
I ended up with a few mysterious charges on my bar tab which they did remove but they still defended the one particular waitress that added up to 7 drinks to the bar copy of my bill. My copy showed 1 drink. Pardon the expression but this did leave a bad taste in my mouth. Worse yet is the fact that they credited my account but still charged my credit card the full amount and now I'm on a wild goose chase for the $65.00.
In all, I wouldn't let these experiences stop me from using Celebrity again. I've been on cruises with good and bad waiters. Believe me, your waiter can make or break your entire experience. Next time I'm going to the restaurant manager and ask for a change if it's obvious the waiter is just going through the motions.
As a footnote, most everyone we talked to on the ship rated Celebrity up there at the top and there were alot of seasoned cruisers.
