Itinerary: Valparaiso Chile to Buenos Aires Argentina

We were pleased with the ship itself but disappointed in the service and food. Also, when we cruised the Chilean fjords' glaciers, it was night and they did not tell you which side of the ship the best glaciers were on. We had a balcony for viewing the beauty and missed the best glaciers because we were not told they were on our opposite side. We did our own shore excursions. Be aware that the ship wants to let all their own tours off first (a problem when tendering) and you have to be assertive if you want an early start. We particularly had a great taxi driver in Montevideo who was motivated to speak English and know the area. His name is Gabriel Rodriguez at www.taxilibre.com. Our one private tour guide (Gerardo Nitchnik tour agency) in Puerto Montt did not show but we were able to reach him by phone and started our tour an hour later. We did get a reduced fee. Just make sure you have all your contact numbers with you and email a reminder shortly before your tour date. The food was average. Desserts were unremarkable. The ice cream was not tasty. Chocolate mousse type desserts were the best. It was bright due to a balcony window (small balcony). The room was tight. The bathroom floor needed a better cleaning and was not improved even after requesting a better cleaning. Very good. Good music groups from 5 PM on in various areas. Don't miss the penguin rookery from Port Madryn. Try to get a private tour so you can get there before the buses. You will feel like you are in a wonderful penguin paradise alone. Also, a good tango show in Buenos Aires is always a must. We had great success in Ushuaia. We did our own Beagle Channel cruise (right at the dock off the ship) and hired a taxi with another couple (you can usually find someone to share expenses with). We saw the national park and the end of the world and even got to the glacier. On the whole, our private arrangements afforded us time to see and experience more. It was a fascinating experience to see this part of the world and experience their culture. The people are gracious and kind!
