The summit is a beautiful ship. Our service was very attentive as promised. Food
in the main dining room was consistently good; but nothing spectacular. Was not
especially impressed with the buffet; but it seemed busy all the time, so
someone apparently liked it. Breakfast served in our room at no additional cost
- that's the ticket. The food was hot and served on time!
Entertainment....Do they really think everyone on board likes musical reviews?
There is alot of room for improvement offering a variety of choices in the
lounges in the early part of the evening; and even more room for improvement
marketing them so that there is an early crowd. Seems bands did not really get
started until 11pm; and that is not really conducive to those who want to get
off the ship at 7am the next morning. The Bar at the End of the Earth had an
intriguing and gorgeous motif; but no one was there to enjoy it.
Shore excursions were good; but better value could be found on your own.
Frontier Excursions in Skagway offered great Klondike tours that ran the same
route as the train, but were less expensive, went further, offered hot lunches,
and stops along the way for photos. For anyone spending time in Anchorage post
cruise; I would also highly recommend Anchorage Kayaking Academy for a kayak
adventure and day hike onto the Matanuska Glacier. We spent 4 hours hiking the
glacier with Jim, owner and guide, and the experience was far preferable to the
typical 20 minutes you spend on a glacier in a helicopter tour. The cost is
$165.pp and includes pickup and drop off in your Anchorage Hotel. The Glacier
trek offered some of the most beautiful scenery in Alaska.
Overall, our Celebrity Cruise was a wonderful experience. My only disappointment
in ports of call was Icy Strait, which offered very little. It would have been
great to have substituted Sitka or Glacier Bay instead.
One note about the ship. We traveled Concierge Class and were pleased with the
cabin and its ample storage and overall comfort. However, the hairdryer the
cruiseline provides will not plug in anywhere except behind the tv, because of
where the outlets are placed in the room. This is really a no brainer and an
easy fix for Celebrity; but one that needs to be corrected. No woman wants to
dry her hair with no mirror!!!
So, bon voyage. I will sail Celebrity in the future. I love the Alaska
experience and will be back again. Oh, By the way, the float plane into Misty
Fiord is a great trip and well worth the money. We booked Family Air Tours out
of Ketchikan and saw 2 grizzly bears, 14 black bears, and about 30 mountain
goats! A heck of a start to our vacation!!!!!!!!!
