The GEM is an awful ship. I just took a cruise to the Bahamas on the GEM. The food was AWFUL, unless, of course, you call beef stroganoff a gourmet meal. The food was always cold or warm, never hot. Their lobster night consisted of two bites of a half tail lobster. Get this...their shrimp cocktail is the CANNED BABY shrimp..imagine? The food was horrible. The burgers were dry, roast beef was dry. NO TRAYS so you had to go back for a beverage or dessert. In the casino, not a soul won on the slots. They didn't pay out anything at all all week. We booked a Suite and all week all we heard overhead was thump, thump, thump,. We were told the basketball court was above us. This was not the case but we just let it slide. No mood to argue on vacation so we put up with the thumping noise all week. Last year I did the exact same cruise with Carnival and EVERYTHING was much better than NCL's GEM. I did have a wonderful time but it wasn't because of the food or entertainment provided by NCL. I wouldn't recommend the GEM unless you have no other choice of ship to sail.

The food was awful. Canned baby shrimp for shrimp cocktail. Beef stroganoff for gourmet food? I think not. Food was the worst of any of the 12 or so cruises I have sailed.

Nice. We booked a Suite. It was basically the same as a balcony only the balcony in the suite was larger.

What activities? No band by the pool. No fun games by the pool. I never saw a band by the pool. There were no activities during the day except swimming in the pool, hot tubs. Other than that, there was a charge for everything. $100 for a week's use of the spa, a charge for bowling, yoga, almost everything.

The only excursion we took was the dolphin excursion. Was very sad. They housed the dolphin in a FILTHY part of the water. It was disgustingly dirty and for $150 you got in line, kissed the dolphin, had a photo taken and then the next person was up.

A vacation is what you make it of course. I had a wonderful time. Swimming in the Caribbean is great of course. But, there was absolutely nothing to do on board and minimal entertainment.
