Norwegian Jewel Cruise Review
We set sail on Sept. 3 from Barcelona, Spain after spending an extra day recovering from our flight.
Barcelona was beautiful and the hotel was fine. Our room had been upgraded a few days before we started our traveling from a mini-suite to a PENTHOUSE. How wonderful that should have been. The penthouse room 11030 was absolutely gorgeous. A beautiful sitting room, a small bedroom with a bathroom and a large master bedroom with a shower and bathtub. Plenty of telephones, televisions, balcony, a table and chairs were there for our convenience. We were so thrilled to be onboard the Jewel. Until we tried to sleep that night. The noises in that cabin were unbelievable. There was an orchestra playing right in the room, this was at two o'clock in the morning. We finally found out that the music was coming from up in the pool area and it was turned off after two trips to the reception desk. After that in the small bedroom there was a gurgle, gurgle, swish sound that occurred every few minutes. One of us finally resorted to sleeping out in the sitting room on the little settee. I took sleeping pills. We told the concierge, the butler, the steward and anyone else we could think of the next morning. That night we also told the assistant director of rooms, about our problem. That night was so bad that I even left the small room and slept on the floor of the sitting room. Talk about uncomfortable. I was certainly not pleased with my accommodations. Again we told everyone, including the reception desk about our problems. That evening the two people, myself included, in the small room were given a room 3 flights down, and obstructed view over the Frizz Lounge. What fun it was having our clothes in one place and sleeping in another. We continued to ask what the concierge was doing to help the occupants of the master bedroom whom still could not sleep properly because of the noise level in the room. There was no other penthouses to put us in was the response.
The excursions were wonderful. Rome, the Vatican, Pompeii, Sorrento, Venice, Croatia, Athens, Ismer, and Istanbul were sights to remember forever. The tours were well conducted, we saw everything listed, we returned to the ship in a timely manner. We were very impressed with the excursions. The excursion we liked the least was in Venice where we toured and wine tasting, when there was not enough time to try the wine and buy the product, most of the time was spent on the bus. The best time was the Blue Mosque, the Harem and the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul. Sights of beauty and grandeur are commonplace in that exciting city.
The food on board the ship was not exciting, good but very commonplace. We did eat in the restaurants but felt the buffet had better choices. We ate all lunch and breakfasts in the buffet, but it was very crowded and it was hard to find a seat, trying to balance the plate, silverware, napkin and beverage. It might be a good idea to have trays.
Embarkation onto the cruise line in Barcelona was good. They picked us up from the hotel and in a few minutes we were onboard the Jewel. Too bad our luggage did not make it for another 6 hours. We could see it but we could not recover it.
Debarkation was smooth but we were some of the last people to get off the ship.
The entertainment onboard the ship was very good.
We also spoke to many other managers onboard the ship to help with our noisy penthouse, but nothing was accomplished. We spoke to the reception desk manager, we had people come up to the room and try to figure out the problem. The problem was there was no insulation above our heads, somewhere someone overlooked a problem and sleepless nights onboard the Norwegian Jewel was our reward.
I paid for a suite with a balcony. I ended up sleeping on the
floor before going to an obstructed view room without a balcony. I was not a
very happy cruiser. Yes, I have written to the company along with my other
roommates but the company has not replied to any letter after a month's time.
