After reading some of the previous reviews of this ship, I dreaded that I had
made a mistake booking this cruise. I am happy to say that my wife and I
thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. From the moment we stepped aboard, we were treated
very well. Our cabin was a delightful surprise. It was very clean and
comfortable. We ended up with twin bunks, which we didn't prefer, but we
adjusted.
The "Freestyle" cruise worked out well. We thought the food was very good and
loved being able to have our meals when ever we wanted. The first 2 days, we
went to the Four Seasons and Seven Seas restaurants. It was nice to be catered
to, but ended up preferring to eat up on deck 10, where it was less formal
(stuffy).
The staff was very cordial. I didn't find that they were overbearing at all. The
first day, the photographers wanted to take our picture, but we politely refused
and they left us alone. I liked having someone come by when it looked like I
needed a drink in front of me. My wife hardly drinks and she didn't feel as
though they were trying to force it on her.
We were lucky to have very favorable weather during the entire cruise. Our time
in Bermuda was well spent. We elected not to buy any of the excursions. Instead,
we rented a scooter for the 3 days on the island. It was great! We rode all over
the place at our own pace. We found some very secluded beaches and even had them
to ourselves for a while.
I wouldn't recommend a scooter rental to just anyone. They don't really check on
your riding skills and if you don''t know what you are doing (especially driving
on the left), you can really put yourselves in danger. Unfortunately, there was
a fatality on our cruise as a result of this very situation.
I found the Bermudians to be very friendly. We were treated very well no matter
if we were in the tourist areas or out and about.
The ship left St. George a day early and moved to the other end of the island in
anticipation of winds that would cause problems. That worked out great for us.
That morning, we took off on our scooter for the Royal Dockyard way on the other
end. It took us about 45 minutes or so to drive. We were there well before the
ship arrived there and we still were able to return the scooter at the local
rental place there.
We left the island for the voyage back to Boston. The seas were less friendly
than on the way down. However, my wife had her motion pills and took them ahead
of time and felt no effects. (I'm fortunate never to have ever been affected).
All in all, we would do it again. Only if it were the same type of freestyle
cruising and only if the stay is for days and not hours. It was nice to take our
time and soak in the pleasures.
Just remember, everyone has there own expectations. Since this was our first
pleasure cruise, our expectations perhaps weren't as high as seasoned travelers.
I hope this review will help you decide whether to go or not.
All I know is that we're glad we did.
