This was the first cruise that my fiancée and I had been on. We both had spent a lot of time on Cruisereviews.com and Cruiseopinion.com researching this cruise. On top of that we researched Cancun, Cozumel, and Roatan. I must say that this cruise far exceeded our expectations. Being from Ohio and the fact the cruise leaves at 4p.m. we had early flights. We were put on TWA by NCL. All the flights were early to our arrival destinations and everything went smooth. We got to Houston and right at our gate were two NCL reps. The two older ladies told us that we were to meet down in the baggage claim area. After getting our luggage we found another NCL rep waiting for us. He led us out to the transfer buses. The buses were the large touring buses and were very comfortable. The trip from the airport to the port was pleasant. You could see downtown Houston off in the distance which was neat. People have complained in the past about seeing all the refineries. This wasn't a problem for us being from Ohio it was neat to see. When we got to the port the bus driver unloaded our bags and a man was waiting to get it for us. He loaded it on his cart and took it away for us. When we entered the building it looked like chaos. We walked up to the desk to the right and we were talking to the lady there within five minutes. We showed our ID and gave her our tickets and we where inline to board. This line was really long yet we were through within ten minutes. It was so well run, we were really surprised. We walked up the long gangway to deck 4 midship entrance. As we walked aboard the cruise director Paul Baya was there greeting us. We were in awe as we came on-board. It was an awesome sight. We then proceeded up to deck 8 midship to our stateroom (8224). Now we have heard all about how cramped and tiny the staterooms were. We did not feel this way. We guesstimated that our room was 150 square foot. It had to lower beds. We decided to try and convert them. Before we could even do that our cabin steward, the D-Man, was there telling us to let me take care of it, which he did. Our cabin steward was the greatest. Twice-a-day he cleaned up our room. On the first day my fiancée and I decided that we would put our dirty clothes in a pile in the far right corner of our room. Every time we came in to change and left when we came back D-Man had folded them. He even washed our glasses and cups that we had. He was amazing. We then setup our onboard credit. This took place in the casino and took all of five minutes. From there is was drinks on deck 9 (the pool deck). The bartenders were excellent and very fast. We then went up to deck 10 (sun deck) and watched as we pulled away from Houston. People on the cargo ships and on shore waved as we left. It was nice. They also had drinks in keeper glasses for $6.00. We got them and sipped away.
Ports of Call:
Cancun:
In Cancun we didn't take a shore excursion. So we were in the last group of people to tender over to shore. I really enjoyed sailing into Cancun. It was fun to watch the Isla Mujeres creep up was great. We took the tender over to Fat Tuesdays and there was a beech right there. We stayed there. The water was perfect. I have never seen such clear water in my life. We swam and sun bathed for about 3 hours then headed back.
Cozumel:
In Cozumel we took the Jeep Safari tour. We had to meet down in the Cabaret Lounge at 6a.m. that was pretty rough. From there we boarded a tender to take us to Playa del Carmen back on the Mexican mainland. Our guides were from Cozumel. One was a lady from the Midwest US. She told us that they fell in love with Cozumel and decided to move there. Our other guide was Niem. He was native Mexican and also lived on Cozumel. He had a rough time with the tender ride as the ride was choppy. When we go to Playa del Carmen we walked up the rode a bit and straight to our jeeps. The fun part about this is that you get to drive the jeep. Once we were all loaded up we drove off caravan style. Half way to our first destination we stop for a potty break and there was a store there. Very nice stuff in the store but we didn't get anything. Then it we were off again. Here is something weird, in Mexico on the highways you are expected drive on the shoulder when someone wants to pass you. Anyhow we got to a nature reserve. There we got to see monkeys, snakes, deer, fox, little orange furry thing. The monkeys just started jumping around in the jeeps and were really cool. From there we went into the cave. Our guide, Jose, was really good. He showed us all around and probably spoke better English then I. From there we headed into a cave. The caves were great. One thing though, when we went they had just entered their rainy season. It had rain heavy the week before and the mosquitoes were real bad. When in the cave they were not a problem since the bats ate them. The bats didn't bother anyone. We saw a couple swoop down but they were not that close to us. The caves were beautiful. I can't even begin to describe them. We also got to see an underground river with was very cool. After we left we got back into the jeeps and bajaed through back roads. We came out of the jungle to what is the most perfect beach I have ever seen. We played volleyball and swam and sunbathed. While at the beach lunch was cooked for us. There were fish soft tacos and beef fajitas. The food was some of the best I have ever eaten. Beware the hot salsa, while extremely good it was really hot. Not for most Americans. It even had the Texans going back for more drinks. From there we drove back to Playa del Carmen. We opted to take the tender back. We could have stayed a little longer in Playa del Carmen, but wanted to shop in Cozumel. We went back to the ship to drop off some stuff then we were off to do some shopping. We got some great deals and eat some great food. NCL went outta their way to let us know which shops were good to shop at and ones we wouldn't get ripped off at. We fell in love with Cozumel.
Roatan :
Roatan, we can't say enough about Roatan. We need to thank Juan Carlito and his friend for showing us a great time. They were these two boys that latched onto us in the shopping district of Coxen Hole. They showed us all around. Showed us the police station and got us a good deal on a taxi to West End. They pointed out to us were they lived and were other family members lived on the way to West End. When we got to West End we walked around and did some sight seeing. Roatan is a very poor island, but you would not know from the people who seem happy and friendly. We stopped at a restaurant and got some Coke for the four of us. Then it was time to head to the beach. The beach was nice and the water was great. Juan Carlito and his friend and I played around in the water while my fiancée watched and took pictures. It was great. Then when we had done enough swimming the boys told us about the Iguana Farm. So we decided to go. We bartered down to $20 for both of us and a return to the ship. We told him we would pay him when we got to the ship. Our taxi cab driver was great stopping the car every time my fiancée wanted to take a picture and pointing things out to him. The Iguana Farm was just someone's house. They asked for a dollar per person and it was worth it. They had a ton of iguana's walking around. Big ones, small ones every kind. It was fun. Then we went back to the ship. It was great we really fell in love with Roatan.
On the ship the food was great, the service was great. They staff worked the butts of to make this the most enjoyable vacation of a lifetime. If you like to have fun do the activities involving Kevin the asst. Cruise Director also known as the Dollar Man. He is so full of energy and is great fun. Everyone was great and the ship is great. I fell in love with the MS Norwegian Sea. It is a quant little ship and I think that is what I love about it. The food at Le Bistro was to die for. I didn't care for the Chocoholic buffet but then again I am the type of person that would rather have more steak then a piece of pie. I would highly recommend this cruise and this cruise line to anyone look to really enjoy themselves. And not only did I get a great tan but I got the greatest woman on the planet to agree to marry me while on board. There is nothing more romantic then a walk on deck 10 at night. It is breathtaking. I already miss being on board. If anyone from the Sea reads this I wish to thank you for all your hard work and thanks for making it the greatest, most fun, most memorable vacation of both my fiancée and my life.
