Itinerary: Western Caribbean

This was our fifth cruise, first with NCL. We had done 3 RCCL and one Princess prior. We really enjoy RCCL so we took the NCL cruise with a little apprehension, but got an incredible price with a balcony. (We never had a porthole, let alone a balcony before) so we were excited.

Western Caribbean was the itinerary. When we originally booked the cruise it was for Eastern which included St. Thomas, the most beautiful place in the Caribbean. It was changed. We did our first cruise in '97 and it was the Western(same ports), but we went ahead anyway. The excursion in Cozumel was well worth the money, a boat trip with snorkeling and then to the beach with unlimited beer and margaritas

The embarkation was terrible. Arrived in Ft. Lauderdale at 1:30. Got to dock at 2:40. Didn't get on ship til 4:10. The drill was already starting. Found our room....Never ever met our steward. Didn't know his name until Tuesday when a card appeared on our desk. Had better service at the Holiday Inn! Our room was sometimes not made up 'til 1PM and not turned down til 9PM. Never had such bad service....Our room was 9231 and a couple we met was in 9218 and had Felix, too so he had quite a few rooms. Other people had wonderful service.

Freestyle dining is okay if you like to eat when you want, but service was shaky. Dinner is not the "event" it is on ships where there is assigned dining.

Because of the above problems I wish we had the option to do our own tipping, not being billed at the beginning the standard rate. Usually I tip according to service.

On a positive note, the entertainment was the best ever experienced. Even last year with B.J. Thomas and the Coasters on the RCCL ship didn't match this. It was great.

The Sky is a beautiful ship and would cruise NCL again as long as we didn't get Felix as a cabin steward.
