Couldn't have been much better if the Child Care Centre worked out for us. Despite all the refurbishing and great service, I still recommend going with a newer ship. The staterooms are smaller than the ones you find on newer ships and definitely showing their age.

Because our 3 year old son was clinging to us the whole cruise due to a traumatizing event on Day 1 (see below) we only ate at the main buffet, poolside bbq and outdoor bar on upper deck. There was a good variety and some made to order options like omellete station and pasta bar. Nice to see fresh fruits and salads all week. Some drink machines didn't work which was a minor annoyance. Our kid enjoyed the food so we give a thumbs up for kid-friendliness.

Small for 3 people even with the upgrade to balcony view. The stewards were amazing though. Very professional and friendly.

On Day 1, we took our 3 year old son to Charlie’s Child Centre for a 6-8 pm program. We were given a pager and asked to report if paged. We had to provide a location where we could be found during the program so we said "Casino". I picked up the pager from my husband at 7:45. It said 0 missed calls. When I arrived at the Centre, the front desk lady said were were paged 3X because our son was crying a lot. No one had contacted my husband at the Casino. Our son came out of the playroom all tear-stained and miserable. Someone tested the pagers and noticed that they did not work consistently. Our son was traumatized and would not leave us for the rest of the cruise. My husband and I could not enjoy alone time and other activities as planned.

When shopping in Costa Maya and Cozumel, it pays to shop around before purchasing. There were stark differences in pricing between different vendors in the same shopping centre. I saved a lot by bargaining and being thorough. It takes longer but if you're buying a lot, it's worth it.

NCL customer service gave us a $200 Onboard Credit Certificate which expires within a year as a "gesture of good will" for the trouble caused by the Child Care Centre incident. We almost wish they hadn't sent us anything as it seemed trivial in comparison to our son's trauma. I let them know that it wasn't much consolation and we don't plan to cruise in the next year. All they did was extend the expiry to 2 years. I see why people say NCL's customer service isn't so great.
