Itinerary: Alaska

Our family recently returned from the 7 day Vancouver/Alaska cruise on the Norwegian Sun.

The positives:

The serving staff, the entertainment (on our cruise - MaryEllen Hooper, Rushlow Harris and JP Parent), the ports of call, the crew's ability to navigate the ship through the fjord and to the Sawyer Glacier and the beautiful, natural scenery.

The negatives:

While there were many positives on this cruise, the largest negative that was difficult to ignore was the constant 'selling' by the staff. Whether it was the hawking of 'pull tab' tickets at the Stardust lounge each night, the constant pitching of booze by the staff as well as more subtle messages from the entertainers to buy drinks. On board activities always seemed to end in the cruise line trying to sell you. It was difficult to escape!

Prior to reaching Ketchikan, our first port of call, there was a 'seminar' on how to maximize your shopping experience. It was nothing more that a means of trying to persuade passengers into thinking that the shops noted by the NCL staff were THE best shops to patronize. Makes one a little suspicious.

The food:

The buffet meals were OK, comparable to a Royal Fork or Knight and Day for quality and the way the buffet was laid out, allowed for the occasional example of rudeness from fellow passengers. The meals in the free restaurants were nice, but not gourmet. The surroundings were very pleasant and the service was excellent. After paying for the priviIege of sailing on the vessel, we were not keen to spend another $15 to $20 per person per sitting to have a meal in the 'pay' restaurants on board, and thus can not speak to their quality.

Excursions:

The shore excursions proved to be more expensive when pre-booked on the ship. In some cases the mark-up seemed to be substantial. The best bet was to book an excursion from one of the companies at dockside or in town.

The cruise was nice, but I'm not sure that I would do it again.
