Itinerary: Hawaii

Got aboard the ship and could not go to our room as they had a flu outbreak (80) on the previous cruise so they were cleaning everything. We got an ADA room, which was much larger than a standard stateroom even though my wife and I are not disabled. We did the Pub Crawl which was fun and did most of our hanging out after dinner in the Gold Rush Saloon. The attentiveness of the wait staff was very good in the Saloon. Can't say the same for the Liberty or Skyline restaurants. IN the dining rooms their was only one waiter or waitress for about 6 tables. He/she took your order, refilled water, took drink orders, brought bread and removed dirty dishes. Several times he/she told us "I'm sorry I will be right back". We were not even offered coffee with our desserts. Too much for one person. As we were getting back on the ship at Maui a couple was getting off with their luggage, the security guard said "hope to see you again" to which they replied "we hope not"

The food was OK. When taking a cruise it is NOT a floating hotel. You expect the food and service to be above average to excellent along with the wait staff. The "flu bug" got to 80 guests on the previous cruise so we were not allowed to get our own food, drinks or silverware at the buffets. Totally "hands off" . We told the staff what we wanted and they put it on our plate. No salt and pepper shakers at the tables or condiment bottles. These were in the small paper packets which we had to ask for. One night we ate at "Lazy J's Steakhouse" a specialty restaurant. They asked if I wanted coffee and I said "Yes" they brought me a cup but never filled it. It is that attention to detail that sets other cruise lines apart from NCL. The food at breakfast was the same everyday except for scrambled eggs which had left overs mixed in with them. Dining room food and buffet food was bland. I have cruised on CCL and RCL and NCL is not even in the same ballpark as these two.

Our stateroom was quite larger than our companions. We got an ADA room which had a large bathroom and enough room at the end of the bed. Looking at the age of the other guests I think they could have used it more. Service was not as good as other lines, their was only twice that we had a "towel animal" in our room and no mints on our pillows. We also had to tell our steward if we wanted turn down service. For the price this should all be standard.

Didn't do much on board activities. Shows were mediocre and their was no organized games up on the pool deck. The cruise director seemed to be MIA during the day.

Rent a car and drive the road to Hana. Spectacular scenery, black sand beaches, blow holes, waterfalls etc. The excursions were expensive. Favorite excursion was the "Kamanu Ctamaran" in Kona. We snorkeled for an hour then went on a trip and found several pods of spinner dolphins. They came close enough for some good photos. Chris and Tim did an excellent job. Luau at the last stop was good, food was below average. Cafeteria grade.

We will not sail on NCL again. We will go back to CCL or RCL from now on. The crew did not do their best to impress us. They seemed more interested in giggling and talking in the kitchen. The dining room staff was not very efficient or attentive. Several times we had to ask for more water or tea. I have received better service in land based restaurants. The service on a cruise has to go above and beyond that. Hawaii was not as sunny and warm as I thought it may be. And it was very windy everyday. The TV was on a swivel base and the ship was rolling so much that the TV would swing back and forth on its base. Even the medicine cabinet door in the bathroom would swing open and closed in the rough seas. The median age of the guests seemed to be about 60. Not many kid activities. I would not recommend this cruise for families with young kids. Our next cruise will be back to the Caribbean and CCL or RCL. I will take their staff over the staff of the Pride of America any day.
