For my 50th birthday, my husband and I went on our first cruise. We had some expert advice from a someone that has taken 20 cruises. He recommended Princess line and gave us some good advice about what to do, and not to do.
Our shuttle dropped us off at the port about 11:00 am and we were in our rooms before 12:00. They have check in down to a science, if you pre-check-in on the internet.
From Sunday until we returned the following Sunday the sea's were calm. The weather was perfect. We chose the anytime dining, which let us eat when ever we wanted without missing any shows or events we wanted to attend. Most of the time we ate at the buffet. We could eat 24 hours a day however much we wanted or how little. The food was excellent at both the buffet and the dining rooms. You will not go hungry.
One of the most memorable times on the ship was watching "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie under the stars. This ship offers a large screen outdoor movie theater where they serve you drinks and free popcorn while you snuggle under a blanket, while you watch the sun sink into the ocean.
We had two days at sea to walk the promenade deck, rest, and sit by the pool. We took in comedy shows, most of which were excellent.
On the third day we stopped at St Maartin and took a half day shore excursion. It was Sea and See. You take a bus around to the far side of the island and are met by a boat that takes you out to an island. You descend down stairs to a runway the length of the boat flanked on either side by windows. A diver goes down with fish food and the fish follow him around the boat for you to see. There are fish, turtles and stingrays in the coral and sea grass to view. Then you are taken back to the bus and on your way to the French town of Margot for a short stop of shopping. The bus completes the circle of the island and you are dropped off at town or back at the ship. We then spent the afternoon shopping before our ship departed for St Thomas island.
On St Thomas, we walked, shopped and ate. No excursion this day. We took the sky lift up the side of the hill and had a panoramic view of the ships and the bays. It was a beautiful view and a photographers dream.
The next day was a sea day, to rest and enjoy the cruise.
On the last full day we stopped at the Princess Cay island beach. What a beautiful beach to play on.
About the ship and staff. Our room steward was wonderful. He kept our room clean and stocked. Turned our beds down and left us chocolate. The entire staff of the ship was friendly and there to help in whatever you needed. I never saw or heard a rude staff member. They made our first cruise experience memorable. I am already planning my next cruise, and it will be on Princess cruise.
