Ship: Caribbean Princess

Sailing Date: 11-10-2008

Itinerary: Caribbean

We just left the ship after a week of great disappointment.

Boarding ths ship in San Juan was a nightmare at best. We waited in the heat and the hot sun for 1 1/2-2 hours before we could board the ship. The lines through the x-ray machines were long and slow. The boarding process probably took 3+ hours.

The major issue was the air conditioning in our room failed on a regular basis and after being off the ship all day; we returned to a hot room. Actually the entire ship was very warm and most people we interacted with felt the same.

Even though we enjoyed our time off the ship, we feel we will not cruise again on Princess. We understand there are always issues that arise but most have been solved in our past experience. The lack of air conditioning ruined our time on board. Our last trip on Royal Caribbean far exceeds the experience we just had on Princess.

The food was basic and unappealing. The service was generally good although they lacked the personal touch and friendliness we have found on Royal Caribbean. We had difficulty getting a seat with anytime dining ,sometimes waiting 90 minutes. They alowed passengers to make reservations, yes, at anytime dining, so the rest of us waited in line. We only learned of that on day three.

The buffet was good, not much different than in our dining room, but the area was hot and very crowded. Room service was good and delivered quickly.

As mentioned above the air conditioning did not work. The engineer tried desperately to serve us but we were told there is a systems problem and the room could not be cooled. It was probably around 76-78 degrees, totally unacceptable.

The steward was wonderful and serviced us well. He went out of his way to try and help us with the air issue. We always had fresh, clean linens and our request for anything extra was always met, and quickly. The room was clean and although not very big, met our needs; the space on the balcony helped a lot. We sat out there while cruising at cool off; at least there was a breeze.

We're actually not hard to please, with the exception of liking it cool.

Loved the big screen movie theatre outside on the top deck.
Enjoyed the piano music in the central locations and the band was good.
Disembarkment was relatively quick and easy, did not wait in long lines.

The casino was smoky, had only a few nickel/penny machines and with this economy, not many passengers were playing any other machines. Actaully most times we were there; the casino was very empty. I do have to admit, it was quite cool in the casino ?????

The entertainment was less than expected and on two occassions, we left the theatre. This cruise lines does not compare to the RC, Navigator of the Seas.

We did not book excursions on this trip although we usually do, and they have been well worth the money. It was our second trip to the Caribbean so we booked our own tours around the islands and had wonderful experiences. The tours, taxi rides, were less expensive and they took us where we wanted to go.

Our last cruise before this one was a 10 day trip on the Star Princess and we enjoyed it very much. We toured Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Russia, Poland and Estonia. There is a big difference between the two ships in most every way.

Overall we thought the ship was "TIRED." It appears that it may be in need an over-haul soon. The ship looked bland; the carpets were dirty and worn. It is very much in need of new/updated decor.

We were sorry we had chosen this ship; we'll go back to RC for sure.
