Golden Princess Cruise Review
Earlier in the year we took a
cruise with Princess on the Star Princess. I enjoyed the cruise very much and
thought the ship was absolutely beautiful. However, unlike our previous Princess
dining experiences, the food on the Star Princess wasn't as good as I expected.
When choosing to sail on the Golden Princess, I knew that the ships were
practically identical and that the cruise experience itself would probably be
the same. But I was wrong!
Golden Princess was absolutely OUTSTANDING!
These ships are brand new, large, accommodating, clean, and beautifully decorated. There is not one thing I could really complain about.
We boarded very late (around 7pm) so there was no line whatsoever. The entire boarding area was empty. Since the ship departs at 11pm you can check in until 9pm. This was very convenient.
We were in cabin E425 and our friends were in E607. They were obstructed ocean view rooms. The view wasn't obstructed at all! The rooms were very clean and weren't actually that small. It was definitely MUCH larger than the ocean view room we had on a Norwegian cruise we once took.
We didn't really ever run into our room steward, but he did an excellent job. The room was always cleaned well, towels and pool towels always restocked. Our friends' room steward was very caring and catered to them endlessly. It was their first cruise and she really made their experience a wonderful and comfortable one (they both were a little run down from sun burn etc).
The food on this cruise was very good. It was much better than the star princess. I would rate it about even with our Norwegian cruise we took last year. The variety of the dining room wasn't as much or diverse as I would have liked it to be, but what they did have, tasted very good. The buffet was much better than normal. This was the first cruise I took where I actually liked the breakfast buffet. They offered some different breakfasts every day. Not just your typical eggs, bacon, cereal, etc breakfasts you get on most cruises. We missed lunch almost every day because we were busy on the islands so I can't really comment about lunch. I didn't try the grill or pizza. Again, so much to do, so little time.
The entertainment on this cruise was OUTSTANDING. The dancers put on the best shows I ever saw. They did 3 shows. The final show they did was just amazing. No way to describe it other than dancing through hoops and hanging from ropes. The final act literally made people yell out "oh my!" It was really exquisite. Don't miss the shows.
The comedian juggler they had was not a real juggler at all. He was pretty funny because he made fun of his inability to juggle and his ability to juggle ping pong balls with his mouth. You would either love it or hate it. It made me laugh hysterically.
The princess star search/princess idol wasn't very good on this cruise. There were many people coming to watch the singers, but not many people volunteered to sing. During the princess idol competition on star princess it was a full crowd and very strong competition.
The disco was okay. I'm not into 80's music so I didn't really get into that. However, when the DJ would switch over to more modern/R&B music and the Latin style music, it was great. This is also when the club would get busier and more people would come in and dance. There was a good sized crowd during this cruise (again not as big as the last one we took but decent).
The service on this cruise was just EXCELLENT. The waiters were not pushy into making you buy drinks. They didn't bother people like they usually do on cruises. They would simply wait for you to flag them down or look at them before they would approach you and ask you if you want a drink. The waiters in the dining room were excellent and friendly. The pursers desk were very friendly and helpful too.
The only thing that I could complain about was the lack of outlets in our room. There was only one plug outlet in our room and one in the bathroom. That's standard though. Also, I would have liked to see more variety on the dining menu. There seemed to be alot of seafood and veal dishes on this cruise. Not much in the chicken/beef department. Also, the high number of Puerto Rican passengers was a little bit disturbing as they can be very rude and inconsiderate, but that is not the fault of the cruise line. Just a precaution for anyone that gets easily stressed out by noise, rude passengers, inconsiderate passengers, and such. However, I didn't let it bother me. There were so many pools and Jacuzzis on this ship, I was always able to find a spot either at the back of the ship or by the lotus spa where I could find an almost empty pool and an empty Jacuzzi.
