Ship: Anthem Of The Seas

Sailing Date: 2015-07-9

Itinerary: Southampton - Southern Mediteranean

After reading about so much technology and numerous advances on the Anthem, we were somewhat disappointed to experience so many problems with the ship's computer system. Two months before boarding, getting on line was slow and complicated in order to make reservations ahead of time for shows and dinner. I had to call the office in Miami many times for assistance which was helpful but not efficient all the time. The greatest problem was making dinner reservations (for what they call dynamic dining") because the most frequent time slot that was available in most cases was 8:45 pm, quite a late sitting.

When we got on the ship, we discovered that there was a "classical" choice which offered the opportunity to either choose an early or later sitting which is the traditional style on cruises. After much complaining, one of the head waiters rearranged most of our reservations for 6:00 which gave us then the opportunity to catch some of the shows mostly scheduled for 8:00 or 9:00 pm.

The food was average in most of the restaurants, but the service was excellent. One problem that was disturbing at times was the description of the food. For example, tiny shrimp were referred to as prawns, a small sponge cake as a crepe, and pumpkin instead of sweet potato.

With regards to entertainment shows, only three were what is expected on a cruise. The remaining 10 nights were covered by a magician, a ventriloquist, a couple of comedians, and some other entertainers that we missed because we had the late dinner reservations. Compared to the shows on the Allure of the Seas, the Anthem gets a failing grade!

Shore excursions also presented a challenge when trying to book them before the trip because of the failing computer system. When we arrived on board we found that there were more shore excursions available than had showed online, and that was another disappointment. In terms of the staterooms, they were suitable and well kept by the attendants. This is a ship that I would only recommend to adventurous passengers who enjoy somewhat more challenging experiences such as the flying and surfing experiences. I will not book another trip on the Anthem because we prefer other types of entertainment.
