Ship: Explorer of the Seas

Itinerary: Western Caribbean

Boarding the ship was easy and uneventful. Departure was delayed by 5 hours due to a mechanical problem. Leaving a credit card is a good idea so as not to carry cash. HOWEVER: The first meal (Miami) before we left port at the Windjammer buffet was just awful. I still cannot get out of my mind how they (restaurant/kitchen staff) could have the gall to serve a sirloin burger that was so dry, hard, and tasteless. I wanted to keep it encassed in acrylic and show my friends a "moon rock". The room was dirty, there were used Q tips in the bathroom floor, hair in the shower drain and some kind of black residue along the stall wall. The King size bed mattress was so worn that it had a sunken center area, which gave me a back pains throughout the cruise. The entire cruise was a shameless exersize in squeezing fees and profits from passengers for almost everything. You name it and get ready to pay for a surcharge! I got so tired of the miserable experience that by the 3rd day of the 7 day cruise, I was ready to get on a plane and go home to relax. Shore excursions were handled by the vendors and RCL to get you in and out of tours by seemingly pushing and shoving every step of the way as if on a cattle car ready for slaughter. The Cruise Line takes great effort (on RCL's TV channel) to steer you towards shops in the various ports that are on an their "approved list". Yet when we purchased a few cases of Rum liquor on Grand Caymen, that never were delivered to our cabin after we left port. No solution to replace was offered. When we complained to the passenger relations liason office they treated us with inderference and apathy. My fiancee was so angry and dissapointed, she cried. The restaurant staff, including Matre'd makes known from the outset that few changes to seating arrangement will be approved. The waiters spend the better part of the journey convincing diners of their need to recieve additional compensation (tips) even though I have recieved more hospitable and welcoming attitude at Wendy's. There are few options for adult entertainment. This boat is catering to families with toddlers. A refund for the AWOL liquor was recieved by the corporate office almost 2 months after the cruise. I am going to stop here as it has taken a long time to recover from this expeience and we will probably be very very careful in chosing the next cruise line.
Very mediocre. Out of 28 meals, 5 were good, 10 were average, and the rest was a cut above pet food.
Intially very dirty. Requested housekeeping to re-clean the bathroom and vac the bedding areas. After is was OK
Good for kids. Nill for adults unless you like to spend time loosing money in the Casino.
I never go on cruise line approved excursions since they are packaged, staid and digested. i like my experienences fresh, adventurous and spontaneous.
See above. Will not travel again on RCL. Very poor value. Unmemorable experience.
