I was unsure
what to expect from my first cruise, but to actually leave the ship after four
days of a seven night cruise wasn't something I thought I'd feel compelled to
do.
This cruise was ruined by very bad weather in the Bay of Biscay, which in
fairness RCCL could not have helped. This meant the first three scheduled stops
- at Guernsey, La Rochelle and Lisbon - were all abandoned.
However, the bad conditions could have been better handled. We suffered a real
scare when a wave broke the window of the cabin two along from ours, leaving
water flooding into our room. The ship's staff were helpful to a point, but made
stupid errors, such as giving us a replacement room which was already occupied.
Even if the weather had been fine, we were disappointed. Legend of the Seas is
really just like a Butlins holiday camp, but on sea, and much more expensive.
The entertainment was an excruciating throwback to the 70s, the pools were out
of use for most of the cruise, and the shops were full of third-rate tat. Both
main dining areas were crowded at breakfast and lunch.
Almost everything on-board was geared up to the elderly, who made up a large
proportion of those on-board. They were largely a depressing bunch, who spent
almost the whole time moaning, not just about the weather, but also about the
children on board (who were immaculately behaved), the crew, the food etc etc.
The good points? The food in the main dining room was on the whole pretty good,
and the waiting and bar staff were excellent. The gym, steam and sauna
facilities were good, and underused as most of the passengers were so old!
We left at Vigo, the first opportunity, and spent a few days in Spain instead.
Thank God for Ryanair!
If you're over 60, and fondly remember Hi-de-Hi, then this boat might be for
you. If not, forget it.
