Well, there are several good beaches on St. Thomas but you'll need transportation. Bumming around with the locals there is doable but I'd stay in the market street areas. Blackbeard's is a nice place but if you don't take a bus you'll have to walk up a zillion stairs to get there. The flea market at the bottom of those stairs is a good place to talk to locals and buy some neat stuff at cheap prices. Wandering on most other islands trying to connect with the locals is ill-advised. Stay on the beaten path.
