It is my understanding that not all cruises have discounts. Some have better than others. For example, we were given a price for the Pride, a 7 day trip to Mexico. The cost was almost the same as the 8 day. Our TA said more people take the 7 day trips, thus the price stays up.
We are retired, but still work for play money. We can take a vacation just about anytime of the year.
