(Ft. Lauderdale, FL - January 31, 2005) Silversea Cruises is expanding its popular Guest Lecturer program with a unique new enrichment series called "The Spirit of Exploration". On select voyages, an internationally acclaimed adventurer will serve as the ship's Resident Explorer, hosting guests to a series of entertaining presentations that reveal the explorer's knowledge, personal insights and quest for discovery. The Resident Explorer will also accompany guests on selected shore excursions.
"Our guests are typically active and sophisticated world travelers with a passion for new learning experiences", said Barbara Muckermann, Silversea's senior vice president, worldwide marketing and communications. "With our innovative 'Spirit of Exploration' enrichment series, guests will have a chance to travel and interact with leading explorers and learn first hand about their exciting feats in earth, sea and space exploration. It's a program designed to give our travel-savvy guests a renewed sense of discovery and adventure that will enhance their enjoyment of the cruise and ports of call."
The following is an initial lineup of explorers and their sailing dates:
Dr. Don Walsh (U.S. Navy Captain, retired) is a renowned oceanographer and world explorer. He has completed over 55 expeditions to the polar regions, and worked at both the North and South Poles. An Antarctic mountain ridge, the Walsh Spur, is named for him. As an undersea explorer, he holds the world's depth record, having made a near seven-mile dive into the deepest known point in the oceans, the Pacific Ocean's Challenger Deep (near Guam), in a pressured bathyscape, a specially designed deep-sea research vessel. In recent years he has made dives to the Titanic, the German WWII battleship Bismarck and undersea volcanoes near the Azores.
