Alabama - surprise - has a very complex liquor code. The new law is for "table" wines. Port and sherry are/were classified as "fortified" wines and were already legal but only for sale in package stores if I understand the law correctly. Thus some brands could not be sold in restaurants. With the new law I guess some ports and sherrys will now be in the same category as "table" wines and thus legal for consumption in restaurants.
Another bill that didn't pass proposed removing this silly "table" "fortified" nonsense.
drlivingston is very much more the wine connoisseur though (I am certainly not). Perhaps he can offer guidance and correction here.
