I normally book my cruises at least 6-12 months out. If I didn't have to beg for my vacation at work, I think I'd take advantage of some of the last minute offers. Unfortunately, we have to apply for our vacation time a year in advance. Sometimes, if it's not during busy times, we're allowed to apply a couple of weeks in advance, but not often.
