We sailed to Alaska last year on Cruise West - one of the small-ship lines which offers "soft adventure" style cruises to the Baja and other points in Central America. I would highly recommend them - comfortable, casual, a great emphasis on the nature and culture of the region, etc. Being able to get close in to wildlife, and to visit smaller ports are among the many advantages of this type of cruising.
