We did the tour on the Golden Princess when we went to Alaska the second time. We decided to spend the money for the tour instead of excursions in a couple ports where we had already been.
We were treated to had snacks and drinks in the galley, received the robes and chef's jackets, had champagne and appetizers while at the bridge, etc. We felt it was worth the $300 to see behind the scenes of the production numbers; the "anchor" deck (for lack of a better term!); the computers that run all aspects of the ship; the printing office where the daily bulletins are printed; etc. My husband is a very detail-oriented guy, so he was fascinated by so many aspects of the tour.
This is a splurge that we were glad we purchased!
