I recall a conversation with a ships engineer on a Freighter Cruise years ago and being told that the ships engine was run on conventional diesel when entering a port, while in port and for departure but once at sea the engine fuel was changed over to the less expensive, less clean Bunker C fuel oil. Bunker C requires a "hot" engine to do its job and burn efficiently and under no conditions was the engine to be shut down while operating with Bunker C fuel as a restart was very near impossible!!
