Oh My! We could write a book on the options for this port. You need to do some homework on the region to determine what would be the best fit for your family. Villefranche is located between Nice and Monte Carlo along a railroad line that spans the coast from Italy to Cannes and beyond. There is also a regional bus line (the #100 bus) that runs between Nice and Monte Carlo and has several stops close to the port. Just to toss out a few names for your "homework" you have Nice, Monte Carlo, Eze, St Paul de Vence, Grasse, Antibes, and more! With a family of 4 on a Med cruise you will find that orgainized excursions are very expensive. But, most ports can be handled on your own with tremendous cost savings (we are talking thousands of dollars) if you are willing to spend some time doing research. You can find lots of info on the internet, at book stores (we sometimes call Borders our office), on this forum (we can help with most ports) etc. Try looking at all the excursion options offered by your cruise line to give you an idea of some of the possibilities. As to independent travel you can use trains, buses, walking, taxis, and even rental cars.
