As many have said recently, they are working in a more challenging environment than space. Space is comparatively simple - the biggest problems being existing in a near vacuum, inertial navigation, and dealing with cosmic radiation. The BP situation is an extremely volatile environment involving hydraulics, thermodynamics...it is truly an engineering challenge that has never been seen before. People like to use the moon landings as a gold standard for engineering and think we can solve everything because of it. It simply isn't so.
