A closed loop cruise is defined as one which starts and ends at the same U.S. port and visits ports under the exclusion for the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI). This includes Canada, Bermuda, Alaska, Bahamas, and other ports in the Caribbean, Mexico, and Central America. Thus, leaving from NYC for Bermuda, and returning to NYC, is exempt from the passport requirement as long as you depart and return on the ship. A passport is required if you had to fly home from Bermuda for some reason.
