In Ketchikan you might want to go to Creek Street early if you want some photos. The light is better in the AM and not as many people. Here are some I took there and in Alaska.

I think what you are doing is Skagway is taking the bus trip to the top. It is a nice trip, not the train ride but you will see looks of sight and get a few more stops. Did the Salmon bake in Juneau once, lots of good eating!!!
Take lots of film or plenty of storage for your digital pics.
