I have heard a lot about the train tour. I think that one will be a must for us. Should we take the round trip or the bus back?

I know you will have a great time no matter what you decide to do.
I do not advise looking for excursions when you reach the port because Alaska is not like the Caribbean or Mexico where they are waiting to take you some place. Those that do independent tours usually arrange them before sailing. My advice is to go into your Cruise Personalizer on Princess.com and select your excursions as soon as they are available which will probably be now. Princess does not charge you for these excursions before boarding the ship. When you arrive in your cabin the tour tickets will be there for you and the cost will be placed on your shipboard account. A cut off time and date will be posted telling when you must turn in these tickets if you do not want to do the tour. If you return the tour tickets before the deadline your shipboard account will then be credited and you will incur no cost. By doing this you will be assured of tours you want and not be disappointed that they are not available.
We are cruising on the Golden in May and have selected to take the White Pass Railroad up and the bus back to Skagway. There are two options- on one you stop at Bennett and tour the ghost town and have lunch then board the train once again and go to Carcross and the other goes to Carcross for a meal, etc. By taking the train/bus you see much more of the Yukon and get a different, beautiful, experience returning by the road. We have driven the road in a RV and are looking forward to having someone drive us this time. Here is a link to their web site
