I can vouch for the Motorola FRS radios. They have quite a selection of sub-channels and I've never heard anyone else on my channel either on a cruise or at the conventions we attend (choose an obscure channel combination, not 10-4 or something everyone else might also think of). Even though they're not as storng as the GMRS(?) they've worked from our room on the 5th floor to the pool deck w/o problems. We've had ours for about 5 years now. With the price drops, I would recommend getting the more powerful GMRS units, good for UP TO 10 miles (open areas only). DO NOT BUY A RADIO THAT DOESN'T OFFER A GOOD SELECTION OF SUB-CHANNELS OR YOU WILL THINK YOU ARE HEARING EVERYONE ON THE SHIP. We took back the first set we bought because of that problem.
