Hi
I'm new to this chat and will be going on Holland America cruise July, apparently going to Hubbard Glacier. I read somewhere on this chat that Hubbard was blocked. So in this instance what would our options be - would the ship take us somewhere else or would we have time to make our own excursion to some other glacier?

Welcome to cruise-chat! If for whatever reason Hubbard Glacier or any of the scenic cruising days are cancelled due to conditions for that day, they'll still seek out an alternative. Perhaps Mendenhal Glacier, Tracy Arm Fjord or another spot just as dramatic and beautiful. That's the nice thing about Alaska sailings, there is no shortage of breathtaking sailing option for the scenic cruising days. It's the days at port that are often limited for alternatives. If a port day is missed, it's very hard to replace. Most port stops are at capacity through the short season with the number of lines and ships that now do Alaska sailings.

Cheers, Neil

The likelihood of replacing Hubbard with a Tracy Arm sailing is slim, as they're many hundreds of miles apart and in opposite directions.

Most of the ships that have sailed to Hubbard (and been blocked) this year simply get as close as they can and sit there with a far-off, distant view. The wildlife and scenery is still spectacular, but with conditions changing daily, I don't see how any of the larger cruise lines can seek an alternative to something that's out in the Gulf of Alaska and not particularly near the Inside Passage.

We was at Hubbard in the middle of May and yes the entrance was blocked. We got as close to it as the captain could but all we saw was the very ending of it,very small part of it.If you got time ,go to Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau
