Short Skagway Rail excursion or long?

My travel agent says it is time to book the Skagway Whitepass rail excursion for our June Princess Alaskan Inside Passage Cruise. This is the only excursion my husband and I want to do. I have heard a lot about it. My travel agent said she chose for us a bus up and then meal stopover and train back for $176 each. I thought that was awfully expensive, and if I did that combination, I think I'd like the train up and bus back. So I told her we might like to do the shorter three hour train excursion which with the cruiseline, is a little over $100 each. I see pros and cons of each. Which should we do?

Sounds like you are paying $76 extra for lunch and a bus ride.
I would take the $100 trip--you'll see pretty much the same thing and still have time to wander around Skagway on your own; the dock is a short walk from town.

I concur with f-mattox. If you take the train both ways, be aware that half the trip will be less scenic in that you will have a mountainous wall 10 feet outside the window at which to look. I'm not discouraging the trip; it is well worth the money and time.

We did the rail last year and loved it. I would not do the luch thing. Grab something on your own.

We did the 3 hour train ride to Whitepass (Canadian Border) with RCCL /99 USD). It was absolutely great. We had also time to see Skagway on our own, which is worth to see!
