No, the weather should be quite nice. But you should take some long sleeve and light weight jacket and sweaters just in case it gets cooler. It can be cooler by the glaciers. I went to Alaska in the month of September and it was somewhere mid 50's to 60. August should still be pretty nice.
It will be cool, but certainly not freezing, in the evenings, near glaciers, or on the water. Anything in the 60's is expected most of the time. I've seen as warm as 90 in August, but even the sunniest of days rarely go above 80. Bring the layers, and more importantly, plan whatever you need to do to stay dry. Wet = cold...

This sounds crazy, but 70° in Alaska is very warm, shorts weather. The first time I went up there I didnt believe my mom (I was born up there but left when I was 2) and she was right. At 70° some people run their air conditioners.
Question:
Do we pack shorts for our trip to Alaska?
We depart on May 28th. Following the cruise we will have a 7 day land tour. So, our trip will end June 11th. I had not planned on bringing shorts, just pants and layered tops. What is the suggestion concerning shorts? I don't want to bring clothes that we won't need. Thanks for your input.

We did Alaska last June 4th-June 11th. I wore shorts on most days...however I wear shorts alot summer or winter.
Take shorts; especially if you are doing a land tour. So many people picture Alaska as "the frozen North", but in the summer that is just not the case.
It can be cold near the glaciers, but if you wear shorts a lot like gdjoslin and I, you will probably wear them most of the time.
Prepare for the cold, but also have a supply of semi warm weather clothing. Like others, I tend to wear shorts and tee shirt almost all the time, warm or cold. Take a little rain gear, too. It can be wet.
I purchased lightweight clothing (like Danskin pants/tops and windsuits) for the trip (May29-June 11th). Will I be too warm with this type of clothing? My husband will bring jeans and shorts. We do have rain gear also. I also have some long sleeved and short sleeved tops for both of us.
