We are going on an Alaskan cruise Aug 10th. We are definately going to take the train ride, since we hear it is fabulous. When is the best time of day to go, our ship offers the following times: 0830, 1240 and 4:15 PM. I would appreciate any input you have to offer. Thank You!!

We did it right away in the morning in August and its a good thing. By the time we got to the top, the fog was rolling in and we really would not have seen anything from the train had we waited. It was a rainy day. I suggest the early one, then you have time to check out Skagway. Make sure you stop in at the Red Onion Saloon and if you go to Juneau, check out the Red Dog as well. Both are cool places to sit down and have something cool to drink. Have fun, you will be hooked. We are taking our 3rd cruise to Alaska in 2008.

take 4:15. that's what we did. the train will be less crowded, and if you are sitting on the left (which is the best side), then when they make you switch sides at the top (I assume by your description you are going up and back) then you may not have to switch sides, which is what happened with us.

I cannot tell you how breathtaking that trip was. absolutely stunning. one of the most spectacular things we have ever seen

Carnival lists a 3 hour ride for $99, and a 4 hour ride for $190.

is this the same train ride? any differences besides the duration and cost?

Looks like the 4 hour excursion is train up bike down. The 3 hour is train both ways I think.

Greyson - we had the opposite weather when we went in September a few years ago. The morning folks had the fog and snow, and we had absolutely beautiful, clear weather at 1:30. Going later was nice because we could take our time with breakfast and avoid the early morning crush to get off the ship, and also enjoy a nice quiet lunch before we left. We had time to do a little exploring before we trained, and because we had a late departure, had time for more exploring when we de-trained. It is a wonderful trip.

We just returned from Alaska on Sunday PM.

We took the last train of the day (4PM?)out of Skagway and it was wonderful. The weather was very clear and conductor said it was the clearest of the season so far (chamber of commerce comment?). At one spot we could clearly view back out of the valley into the harbor and saw the ships clearly.

A real benefit that I appreciated is that the car we were in (off ms Statendam) only had 10 passangers so we each had a full seat~on both sides of the train~ for the entire trip. We were in the first car going up (good view of engines) but we were the last car going down with a full unencumbered view of the entire gorgeous trip off the back porch of the car!!!
