We are planning a cruise that would arrive in Anchorage on September 7th around 1:00am. We are thinking about staying in the area for a day or two for a few additional activities. Can anyone suggest things we might do in the area? Is it possible to get to Mt McKinley with only 1 day? We looked into the cruise tours but they are a bit pricey and we would like to explore on our own.

Yes, but it is still around 250 miles each way. I don't know if I'd want to bite off that much of a drive on my own but that is me. You would still have plenty of daylight in September.

You could take the Alaska Railroad. It leaves Anchorage at 8:15AM and arrives Denali at 3:45PM. Look Here

It's been some time since you posted but we are also arriving in Anchorage on the 7th. The boat arrives in Whittier at midnight but disembarkment doesn't begin until 8AM (the tunnel out of Whittier doesn't open till the morning). We are looking at several whale cruises/wildlife tours to kill the day in Whittier, then we are taking the Alaska Railway to Anchorage (few more dollars but nicer than the bus - its longer too) 6:45 depart/9:50pm arrive. On day one in Anchorage we are going to Katmai/Brook Falls for grizzly viewing (hopefully) and on day two in Anchorage we are going to the Anchorage Natural History Museum and the Alaska Native Heritage Center Museum.
