First Time Alaska Cruise

Hello All,

This is going to be our very first cruise and are looking for recommendations/suggestions. We chose to look into Alaska. We are in our 30's with no kids. We are planning to do excursions at the ports while on our trip.

Overall we would like a cruise line that lets us "enjoy it all." Is there a preferred route to take in order to really experience all that Alaska has to offer? In addition, is there a cruise line that will accommodate that route?

We prefer to leave out of Seattle but it is not a deal breaker leaving from a different port. Also, we are planning on going in August/September.

Any help or comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance! :)

Norwegian Cruise Lines and Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines both would be good choices for your age bracket. The both have ships leaving out of Seattle; the Norwegian Jewel and the Rhapsody of the Seas respectively. The ideal trip to Alaska would be to do a seven day cruise and also add land time, pre or post cruise to see Denali National Park and other others inland. If you only have the typical seven day vacation then going roundtrip out of Seattle would probably be best for airfare. You can also do a one way start in Anchorage (Seward or Whittier) and sail to Vancouver, or vice versa. Leaving out of Seattle a typical cruise would be to stop at the big three ports of Ketchichan, Juneau, and Skagway, with a day at one of the glacier which you don't leave the ship. You also would stop at Victoria, Canada to meet the foreign port requirement.

I've been to Alaska in both of the months of August and September. The weather can be finicky so you want to prepare for anything. Dress in layers.

I would highly recommend you find a travel agent that specializes in cruises and can go over the differences in the cruise lines and match you up with the one that meets your expectations.

I'm taking my first Alaskan cruise on Sunday, so I can provide recommendations when I get back. I'll be 30 this year, and I'm going on Princess Cruise Lines, which also goes round trip to Alaska from Seattle. This will be my first time on Princess.

Thank you so much for your replies. I appreciate the suggestions and of course the tips about the preparing for the weather conditions.

MCPayne, have fun on your cruise and am looking forward to your review!
