My husband saw a segment on TV about Ice Wine that is made in Alaska. It is evidently made from snow. Has anyone seen this at the typical Alaska ports? He wants to try it.

Oops. I just searched Ice Wine and it's made from frozen grapes!

It sounds delicious as I prefer my wine chilled vs room temp I'm sure I would like it!! We will be crusing Alaska in August, perfect for a glass of chilled wine...yummy

The wine derives it's name from the process used to make it and not by it's serving temperature. However ice wine is usually served at around 45 degrees.

For some reason I do not see how ice and fermenting go together.

Where is going to be my best choices to try the ice wine, or is it pretty easy to find. Do you recommend buying a bottle to bring home?

Ice wine really isn't an exotic thing only found in Alaska. It has been made in Germany for a long time (Eiswein) and is also made in New Zealand, Washington state, and Idaho, among other places. They even make it in Ohio. There is one winery in Alaska that makes it at Denali, which is probably what Nadine saw on TV. It is much more popular in British Columbia so you'll likely find a larger selection in Victoria. It is a dessert wine and very sweet. It is likely you can find it at a nearby wine store - probably one with a larger inventory than most. If your state allows interstate wine sales you can probably order it on-line.

Thanks Dave for the info....I guess I just hadn't ever heard of it. I do really prefer sweet wines so I'm sure I would like it. I just really wanted to try it and didn't realize I guess that it would be available locally at a wine store. Maybe I just wanted this to be part of the Alaskan Cruise experience

It's a big item in Ontario Canada also.

My husband found the ice wine in Leavenworth, WA. It is very expensive! He paid $28 for a small bottle, with many labels costing $60. But he wanted to try it. He said it is very sweet, almost like a liqueur. It is the uniqueness that he enjoys.

He said the ice wine he bought came from a winery in Yakima, WA. We were told at the liquor store that ice wine originated in Austria.

It's just fun to try new things and he has enjoyed this.
