Am choosing between two cruises...the trips are basically the same except one includes Sitka and the instead includes Skagway. Am sure they both have their advantages but perhaps one of you seasoned cruise folks can help was to which one you preferred. Your input would definitely be appreciated!

Hello southfloridapaul, and welcome to Cruise-Chat;

I don't want to take anything away from Sitka; it is a charming and very picturesque little town. But so is Skagway; and Skagway was the White Pass Railroad, which I believe many of us would say is one of the highlights of a cruise to Alaska.

Rick has it correct there, if I had to choose a cruise and the decision came down to these two ports, go with Skagway. Aside from the White Pass Railway, there seems to be more to do.

I've done Skagway twice now and the railroad ride twice...DON'T MISS IT.....I'm going to Sitka on my next cruise in 15 days....not that much to do there.....Do Skagway....Happy sailing...Anywhere in Alaska is wonderful...

We were in Skagway and Sitka this past May. In Skagway we took the bus excursion into the Yukon and the White Pass Railroad back. This was one of our favorite excursions. Our bus passed a bear and we saw mountain goats when we stopped at the Yukon sign. The train ride was remarkable. In Sitka we took the sea otter excursion. We saw sea otters and whales. Sitka has a Russian influence. We enjoyed the shops. If I had to choose one port I would also do Skagway.

Although I really loved the Raptor Center in Sitka, I vote Skagway for me, too. We were in both ports last month and liked Skagway WAY better. The town is just so charming, like right out of Gunsmoke. And the train ride is outstanding.
