We'll be in Europe on a Mediterranean cruise for 12 nights. I was wondering about the exchange rates that cruise ships give for the US Dollar. We'll mostly be exchanging for Euros, but also lira (?) in Istanbul . Obviously I can wait until I get on board the ship next week but I would like to know from other cruisers because the Euro is at an all time high today ( 1Euro=1.37US) Thanks, Schnappi

You will get a much more favorable rate of exchange at a commercial bank; but then the convenience of exchanging on the ship is rather compelling.

You shouldn't need anything other then U.S. Dollars and Euros. The few places that didn't take either took MasterCard and Visa.

Hi Schnappi. We recently returned from a cruise in Europe. Not wanting to carry a lot of cash with us, we exchanged our USD for Euro prior to leaving home. We spent a few days in Amsterdam pre-cruise, and used an ATM to withdraw more as the cruise approached. (Just check with your bank before you go...they will give you numbers to call if you run into problems overseas, and advice regarding your PIN). As f-mattox indicated, many places will take MasterCard or Visa...some will take American Express, as well.

Enjoy your cruise!

Thank you Mattox and Lisa; it's just that the ATM is fine but our bank charges extra plus you have to find one (OK so it's not that difficult) and I'm taking cash and just planning to exchange it once I get over there. Thanks for your responses. Schnappi
