Anyone been on the Marco Polo - Orient lines - the Cape Town to Mombasa route?

Very nice ship. (Built by the Russians as a passenger/survey ship for use in polar areas) Well appointed, but two problems. When my wife and I cruised on her from Istanbul to Athens in 1999, we discovered that our ocean view cabin had twin beds that would not join together plus we discovered that the soundproofing between cabins was less than desirable. Having said that, we found the ship well appointed, nice crew, excellent food and service. Everything considered, we recommend the Marco Polo. cruiseman

Hi cruiseman,

the "Marco Polo" was actually built in Germany (GDR) for the Soviet Union's Leningrad - Montreal trans-Atlantic service. I will be onboard her next month. I will write a full review of my trip.

Hi! I sailed the MP on a Black Sea cruise in '99 and found it a very pleasant experience, different from that of the mega-liners. It has the look and feel of a real oceangoing vessel. The decks have sheer and camber. The public rooms are small, but well appointed. The crew is professional and efficient. Orient features destination cruises with more exotic ports of call and active shore excursions.

I'll be sailing her again next month on a solar eclipse cruise from Mombasa to Capetown and beyond to South America. Looking forward to a 32-day voyage with half the days spent at sea.

I'm back from the "Marco Polo" - one of the best cruises I have taken. The ship is wonderful with very few weak points.
