My husband & I are going on our first cruise May 2006 on the MSC Lirica transatlantic. I've been searching these boards & others (and reading Tom Ogg's reviews) looking for some answers to some odd questions.

1) Anyone else here going on that cruise?

2) Is wine free with dinner or do you pay extra? (I know drinks outside of meal times are extra)

3) What about coffee?

4) Someone on another thread mentioned "online class" prior to their January trips, Can someone please provide a link or more info regarding these classes.

5) What is a good "average" dollar budget per for additional expenses; i.e. tips, excursions, internet, phone calls, non-alcoholic beverages ..etc.

6) Weather in May for Carribean & transatlantic...is it hurricane season yet?

7) Anything else that a newbie should know or do about their first cruise (beside what Tom has written) I'm talking "insider" stuff.

<<2) Is wine free with dinner or do you pay extra? (I know drinks outside of meal times are extra)>>

You will pay extra, however, MSC;s wine list is very reasonably priced. If you order a bottle at dinner and do not finish it, they will save it and serve it to you the following night.

<<3) What about coffee?>>

Coffee is always free unless you order specialty coffee drinks.

<<4) Someone on another thread mentioned "online class" prior to their January trips, Can someone please provide a link or more info regarding these classes.>>

The ship will offer computer classes that you can sign up for. You do not need to do so in advance.

<<5) What is a good "average" dollar budget per for additional expenses; i.e. tips, excursions, internet, phone calls, non-alcoholic beverages ..etc.>>

It all depends on what your tastes are. Many folks can go on a cruise and not spend anything. Others spend a bunch of money. The more research that you do, the less you will spend.

<<6) Weather in May for Carribean & transatlantic...is it hurricane season yet?>>

Awesome and Nope.

<<7) Anything else that a newbie should know or do about their first cruise (beside what Tom has written) I'm talking "insider" stuff.>>

Be prepared for an International crowd, some smoking and announcements in several languages. If you understand that is what the experience is going to be, you will have a fabulous time.

Thanks Tom for the reply

We've travelled to many different countries before including Italy, we are both very open minded and LOVE different cultures. I'm going to ingore the bad comments (other posts not this one) and just decide we ARE going to have a great time!- Thanks

I'd still be interested to hear from anyone else on the transatlantic cruise and ports etc.

With many days at sea, you will be able to enjoy some of the ammenities on board, like the hot tubs, the pools, the saunas, the library, etc. You also will be able to participate in on board activies (if you choose). If I could stay out of the casinos, I probably wouldn't spend so much. I usually budget $200/a day in port and $100/a day at sea for drinks, tips, excursions and shopping. (This is to purchase my travelers checks before I leave). The casino, I try to stay within $200/a day. Sometimes I get lucky, most of the time, I contribute to the cause. The weather in May should be totally awesome. Hurricane season doesn't start until mid June. Of course, last year it didn't end until December--yuck!! I don't know about insider stuff, but the first day on board, we like to check out the decks. We're not alcoholics, but I want to know where the bars are. I also want to know which bar is quiet, which bar has music, etc. I also want to find out where the food is, the pools, etc. We always try to book a balcony, but when I can't afford it, I make sure I'm up early to be on deck to watch the sunrise, especially if we're pulling into a port. I love watching the flying fish, the waves, and once in a while catch site of dolphins. In the caribbean, we always do snorkeling excursions. We've done some on our own, but mostly through the ships. I'm really not much of a shopper, but always end up buying t-shirts, bathing suit covers, polos, and local spices. I'm learning not to pack as many clothes, because I always come back with too much more than I left with. St. Thomas is the place to buy jewelry. Barbados is the place to buy Bajan Pepper Sauce (if you like hot spicy sauces). Grenada is the place to buy spices. Wish we were going with y'all, but not until October. Enjoy your cruise!!
