We're new to cruising. Planning a July Grand European river cruise on Viking. Is it important to get the travel insurance for such a trip? Does anyone have experience with this cruise company? We're grateful for any input. Thx.

It is always recommended you get travel insurance. It not only protects you for sickness or death in the family before you leave. It also provides protection for trip delays, trip interupptions, medical evacuation, medical emergencies on the trip, lost luggage and more. Sorry I haven't been on Viking.

I agree about getting insurance. It's like any insurance, in that if you buy it and don't need it, it's money spent that you didn't need to spend. But if you end up needing the insurance, it can save you a lot of otherwise lost money.

I sailed with Viking River Cruises a couple of years ago in France, and had a great time. It's not the same experience as mega-ship cruising, and has a lot of advantages. The company did a good job for us.

Hi everyone,
I would think that cruise insurance is good in some respect, but we recently experienced a problem.
We were stuck at JFK airport in NY, March 25, 2007. We were to arrive in Rome 11:20am March 26th to go on our 12 night European cruise. Unfortunately our flight with Alitalia was cancelled because someone ran the truck with our luggage into the door of the airplane. http://cruise-chat.com/groupee_commo...n_confused.gif
There was 58 passengers on that flight to catch that cruise ship, Carnival Freedom, the next day.
Alitalia put us up in a hotel for the night. While at the hotel I called Travel guard and explained what happened. The lady told me that the insurance wouldn't cover that type of a problem and gave me no assistance what so ever.
40 of us had to take a bus to Newark, NJ to catch Air France to Paris, the other 18 got flights out from JFK, we all met in Paris and rushed over to catch another flight to Naples to catch our ship there.
I told Travel Guard I want to start a claim anyway to have someone review it.
Now we have to wait for a letter from Alitalia to give us a letter explaining why the flight was cancelled.
Be sure to alway keep your boarding passes in case you experience this type of a problem.
I would imagine the insurance is good for normal conditions and medical, but I believe with Travel Guard you have to pay first and put in a claim to get your money back.
We did get travel insurance for our next 2 cruises and hope that everything goes smooth.

Please let us know how this turns out. Still better to have it than not to have it and I have a sneaking suspicion that they will cover.

It depends on the type of insurance you purchased. If you purchased "secondary insurance," that's the case. If you purchased "primary insurance," the insurance company pays you outright if you're making a claim for a covered reason.

Hi Sandy,
Thank you for that information. I didn't know that there was a primary or secondary insurance. I will check that out for our next 2 cruises and future cruises. http://cruise-chat.com/groupee_commo...icon_smile.gif

Chef Ken,
I'm sure it will be time consuming, but I will let you know what happened.
Sandy
